Paperboy for ChatGPT
Today ChatGPT reaches Paperboy through a custom GPT Action. The MCP route waits on OAuth, and this page says exactly why.
Set up
You will add Paperboy's OpenAPI file as an Action on a custom GPT you can still edit, with the key sent as a Bearer API key.
ChatGPT can add a custom remote MCP server (Plugins, Add custom MCP server), but OpenAI says it cannot present custom API keys, so Paperboy's bearer-key MCP server cannot connect there until Paperboy has OAuth. The REST route still works through a custom GPT with Actions, but OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on Dec 11, 2026 and personal accounts can no longer create new ones.
Check you can still edit a GPT. OpenAI says Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts cannot create new GPTs but can keep editing ones they made. For Business and Edu workspaces, follow your workspace notice. New GPT creation ended on Oct 26, 2026 for affected Enterprise workspaces.
Open Explore GPTs in the ChatGPT sidebar (chatgpt.com/gpts), select My GPTs, choose your GPT, then select Edit GPT.
In the editor, go to the Actions section and select Create new action.
Add the schema by importing it from the URL above. If it is valid, the editor shows the detected actions.
Open Authentication, choose API key, set the type to Bearer, and paste your pb_live key.
Click Test next to an action (listSites is a good first one), paste the suggested instructions into the GPT, then select Update.
https://paperboyseo.com/api/v1/openapi.jsonReplace pb_live_YOUR_KEY with a key from Settings, API keys, and never commit it. The MCP docs list every client we cover.
How to tell it worked
Click Test next to listSites in the editor and check the response lists your sites. Then ask the GPT in Preview to list your Paperboy sites.
How to remove it
Delete the GPT from the three-dot menu in the GPT editor. The docs do not describe removing a single action.
What you get
Eight tools, the same engine as the dashboard. Reads are free. A pack is $20 for 100 credits; see how credits work.
get_sitesLists your sites with plan, publishing method and whether Search Console is connected. Every other call starts from a site id.
suggest_topicsReturns the next articles to write, each with the search data that is the reason for it.
write_articleStarts a fact-checked article and returns an id at once. The run takes a few minutes. It does not publish unless you pass publish: true.
get_articleReturns the article's status, its fact-check verdict and every source. Poll it after write_article until it reads published or needs_review.
check_claimsFact checks any public URL or pasted Markdown and returns each cited claim with the sources it was compared against.
publish_articlePublishes an article that passed the fact check to the site's publishing target. It changes the live site, so the agent should ask first.
get_performanceSearch Console clicks, impressions and average position for a site, by day and by article.
get_queriesThe queries a site, or one article, appears for in Search Console. This is where page-two keywords show up.
Try it
Plain requests. The tools each one uses are listed under it.
“Which of my pages rank on page two for search queries? Pick the best topic and tell me why.”
Uses get_sitesget_queriessuggest_topics
“Write the article for the first topic, then show me the fact-check verdict and the sources before anything goes live.”
Uses write_articleget_article
“Fact-check the draft I paste below. If the matching Paperboy article passed its fact check, publish it.”
Uses check_claimspublish_article
Why
This is the page that tells you the awkward part first. OpenAI's plugin docs say ChatGPT cannot present custom API keys and expects OAuth for authenticated MCP servers. Paperboy's MCP server uses a bearer key and has no OAuth yet, so the connector route does not work today.
The REST route does work. Import Paperboy's OpenAPI file as an Action on a custom GPT you can still edit, and set a Bearer API key. OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs on December 11, 2026, so treat this as a bridge. If you can, use Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, which send the key directly.

Honest notes
Quirks of this client that can cost you an afternoon.
The MCP route does not work for Paperboy today. Plugins > Add custom MCP server expects an OAuth 2.1 flow for authenticated servers, and OpenAI's plugin docs say ChatGPT cannot present custom API keys. https://paperboyseo.com/mcp uses a static bearer key with no OAuth yet, so do not expect it to connect.
Custom GPTs are being retired. Standard retirement is Dec 11, 2026 (Feb 11, 2027 for FedRAMP and approved deferrals), actions do not transfer when a GPT is migrated to a plugin, and a GPT can use either apps or actions, not both.
Actions call the REST operation IDs, not the MCP tool names: getQueries, suggestTopics, writeArticle, getArticle, checkClaims, publishArticle and so on. Users may be asked to approve an action before it runs, and Enterprise or Edu admins can limit which domains actions may call.
FAQ
Not today. ChatGPT adds custom MCP servers from Plugins with Add custom MCP server, but OpenAI's docs say it cannot present custom API keys and expect OAuth for authenticated servers. Paperboy's MCP server uses a bearer key and has no OAuth yet.
It is an OpenAPI 3.1 file with an HTTP bearer security scheme. Actions accept OpenAPI as JSON or YAML, imported from a URL, and the editor lists the detected actions if the schema is valid.
OpenAI says Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts cannot create new GPTs, though existing GPTs stay editable. Business and Edu depend on your workspace notice, and new Enterprise creation ended Oct 26, 2026.
The Responses API has an mcp tool with an authorization field, which OpenAI documents for OAuth access tokens. Whether a static Paperboy key is accepted there is not documented.
The tools that read cost nothing. Suggesting topics costs 1 credit, writing a fact-checked article costs 12 credits (refunded if the run fails) and a fact check on its own costs 2 credits. A pack is $20 for 100 credits.
Only if you let it. write_article defaults to publish: false, so a finished article waits for a human, and the tool descriptions tell the agent to ask before publishing. You can also give the agent a read-only key.
